Agricultural Revolution
Chapter 1
〜Series of Human's Miscalculation〜

日本語
For 2.5 million years, humans have collected plants and hunted animals for food.
But about 10,000 years ago, everything changed.
From sunrise to sunset, humans sowed seeds, watered crops, pulled weeds, and led sheep to lush pastures.
The idea was that if they worked this way, they would be able to obtain more fruits, grains, and meat.
This was a revolution in the way humans lived, an agricultural revolution.

from Yuval Noah Harari, Sapiens

What kind of game "Agricultural Revolution" is?

This is a full-fledged adventure-type simulation game that recreates humanity's "agricultural revolution."
You explore the map as a human.
Find hidden items in the map,
and the population will increase or decrease and the topography of the map will change.
What items do you need to increase the population?
What must you do to survive?

This game can be played on iPhone and Android smartphones.

How to proceed with the game

Let's explore the map first

When you start the game, you are in the forest.
First, let's explore the surroundings.

There are different grids on the map. What do these mean?

If you look closely, you can see that the colors of the grids are slightly different. What does this mean?

Let's go back to the hut and move forward in time

When you arrive at the ▲ grid, you will finish your search and enter the hut.

When you press this "Advance time" button, the human falls asleep and the computer starts the simulation.
An animation will play during the simulation.

A lot of information is hidden in animation.

Circles of different colors and sizes are displayed. What does this mean?

The background color seems to change as time progresses. What does this mean?

Be careful because if there is not enough food, humans will be wiped out

As time progresses, we calculate the amount of food each year.
As the population increases, the amount of food needed also increases.
Food can be gatheed from the fruits of the forest, the crops of the fields, and the animals you hunt and kill.
Necessary food < Gathered food
This condition is called famine, and if famine continues three times, humans will starve to death.
Also, even once, humans will starve to death when
Required food < Gathered food x 0.5

You can acquire technology by clearing the conditions

The more skills you acquire, the more things you can do in-game.
Acquire as many technologies as possible.

You can check the acquired skills and items after the game is over

First, let's move forward 100 years.

Game tips

Items on the map are different every time

Items required to acquire technology may not always exist.
It's like as in the real world,
there are regions where lions live and where they don't, or
there are regions where bananas grow and where they don't.
Don't give up and try again and again.

Sometimes listen to music

How do you feel when you listen to music that plays as time passes?
Is it comfortable?
Do you feel lonely?
Music is closely tied to the map's environment.

Sometimes get up and go back to the map

When humans are asleep, they are actually calculating something other than food.
That is the "soil fertility"

Think of "soil fertility" as something like the thickness of the soil layer on the ground.
Crops can grow in land with "high fertility = thick soil layer", but
crops cannot grow on land with "low fertility = thin soil layer".
If you keep planting crops on the same land, the soil layer will gradually disappear.
When soil fertility falls below a certain standard, it becomes a desert.
That's what actually happens in the real world.
However, the soil fertility will gradually recover (but it takes time).

There's an ecosystem in this game.

In fact, the answer to the question posed earlier, "Why are the colors of the grids slightly different?" is that the darkness of the color indicates the soil fertility.

Desert Grids Recover Slowly

In this game, it takes about 100 years for a desert to return to a meadow.
During that time, you cannot create field on that grid.
Meadow grids recover twice as fast as desert grids.
The fertility of field grids decrease every year, but the fertility of meadow grids recover every year.
So...?

Take a closer look at the report

The report that appears when you complete the game contains a lot of important information.
Temperature, rainfall, what kind of plants were growing, what kind of animals existed, etc.
These should be hints for acquiring new skills in the next game.

Actually, “regenerative power” is the key

In this game, the power of nature is called "regenerative power".
If the "regeneration power" is high, you can harvest a lot of crops and fruits.
The soil's fertility will recover faster, and animals can give birth to many babies.

The "regenerative power" increases as the temperature and rainfall increase.
It is the same as the fact that plants grow faster in regions with higher temperatures and humid.

You can check "regeneration power" in this line of report.

Check the parameters

Once you clear 100 years, you will be able to see the parameters in the game.
Once you acquire the skills, you will be able to adjust these parameters yourself.
In order to acquire new technology, it may sometimes be necessary to change parameters.

Population growth rate depends on technology

During the hunter-gatherer era, when humans moved from place to place, women could only give birth to a child once every four to five years.
Because she couldn't carry more than one baby when she moved.
It wasn't until humans started farming, stopped being nomadic, and were able to raise livestock to obtain milk that women were able to have children every year.
This is a very important fact, so it's one of the things I wanted to express in this game.

Parameters related to population growth can be found in these lines on the parameter screen.

Fruit trees are difficult to regenerate

Turning fruit grid into field grid reduce your food amount from fruits.
Once fruit trees are gone, they are difficult to regenerate, so be careful.
Even in the real world, in the long history of humankind, it was only very recently (during the Greek and Roman eras) that humans were able to cultivate fruits like apples and peaches.

The goal of the game is not just one

In this game, time continues to move forward even if humanity becomes extinct.
In fact, the survival of humanity and population growth are not the goals of this game.
What kind of future do you wish for the earth?

To enjoy the game even more

This game is based on,
Yuval Noah Harari, "Sapiens", 2011, which I quoted at the beginning,
Jared Diamond, “Guns, Germs, and Steel”, 1997, and
Jared Diamond, "Collapse”, 2005
I created this game because I was very impressed by those books.

All books are thick and worth reading.
Unfortunately, this game couldn't express even 1/100 of what is written in those books.

In this game, when you create a field for the first time, something "strange" happens.
What does that mean?
Please read "Sapiens" and look for the answer.

Somthing a bit difficult

The parameters written below may change depending on the game version.

Algorithm for Animal hunting

Algorithm for number of animals
